Julie just received her home equity loan check. She held the check for $30,000 in her hands and stared at all of the zeros. She went over the bills that she knew that she needed to pay off, and then she tried to calculate how much she would have left. After paying off all of her credit cards, her car loan and some medical bills, she would still have about $2,500 left over. She wondered how she would use the extra money. She didn't want to waste the money on something frivolous, so she asked her lender how to get the most from your home equity loan. The lender gave her a few suggestions.
Get the Most from Your Home Equity Loan
Getting the most from your home equity loan is going to mean something different to each homeowner. To get the most from your home equity loan you first need to decide what financial goals you have. Do you want to pay off your credit card debt? Do you want to pay off medical bills? Do you want to buy a new car? Or, do you want to remodel your home?
After you have a list of financial goals that you would like to accomplish with your home equity loan, you will need to rank your goals from most important to least important. Next to each financial goal write down how much it is going to cost to meet this goal. Go down this list subtracting the cost of the goal from your home equity loan amount. Stop when you run out of money or when you run out of goals.
If you have any money left over after meeting your financial goals, then you can use this money to have some fun. To get the most fun from what you have left, first determine if you want to do one big thing or several smaller things with the money. For example, if you have $5,000 left over then either you can take a couple's cruise or you can buy equipment and media to build a home theater room.
