Owning a business is like owning a home. You have to work to keep up its curb appeal, you need to create an operating budget for it and you need to buy insurance to protect it from accidents, damage and theft. While selecting the right insurance for your business may sound easy, that's not always the case. To make shopping for business insurance easier, you should learn about what insurance needs your company has and then request information from insurance agents that address these concerns. What Insurance is Required? Before you start thinking about what optional business insurance policies you need to buy, you really should begin by understanding what insurance policies are required in your area. Worker's Compensation Insurance is required by law for all companies that have regular employees. If you don't have any employees then you don't have to take out this insurance. However, if you do have regular employees then you will need to purchase a Worker's Compensation Insurance package that at least covers medical care, rehabilitation, lost wages, and court costs associated with the injury. If you really want to protect your business assets then you can also purchase the third part of this insurance which covers you in case you are sued because of your employment practices. In additional to Worker's Compensation Insurance you may also need to take out general liability insurance. The requirement for this type of insurance is usually determined by your state or local government. Your insurance agent will be able to tell you what insurance is required in your area. Getting What You Need To get the best idea about what optional insurance policies your business needs, think about what hazards your company faces in its day to day operation. For example, do you live in an area that floods or has tornadoes? Or do you own a business that may experience an explosion or similar catastrophe? Think about what unique situations your company faces that may cause property damage, personal injury or legal liability and create a list of your concerns. Use this list when talking with your insurance agent to see what insurance products you can buy that will address all of your unique business concerns. |
